Lefton China Company was founded in 1940 by George Zoltan Lefton, a Hungarian immigrant who began importing hand-painted porcelain from Japan. During the post-World War II era, Lefton became one of the most prolific importers of Japanese ceramics to the United States, producing decorative items that combined European aesthetic traditions with Japanese craftsmanship.
